OWC Health Awareness Series: Chronic Conditions Awareness (World Hypertension Day, May 17 / Stroke Awareness Month)
May marks two critical health awareness campaigns: World Hypertension Day on May 17 and Stroke Awareness Month. While these are distinct conditions, they are clinically related. Hypertension is the single most significant modifiable risk factor for stroke globally. Both conditions are often asymptomatic until a crisis occurs, making them particularly dangerous for internationally mobile employees who may delay routine health screenings while navigating unfamiliar healthcare systems.
For international employers, chronic conditions like hypertension represent a dual risk. They are a leading driver of long-term healthcare costs within international health insurance plans, and they pose a severe threat to employee wellbeing and productivity. Addressing these risks requires moving beyond reactive care to proactive, preventive health management.

About the OWC Health Awareness Series
One World Cover’s Health Awareness Series is a year-long program designed to help employers of globally mobile staff shine a spotlight on critical health issues. Each month we highlight one or more key condition or area of wellbeing – sharing practical resources, workplace tools, and communication materials that HR teams can use to educate and engage their employees. The aim is simple: to encourage prevention, promote early detection, and empower organizations to support the long-term health of their people.

Understanding the Scale of the Problem
The statistics surrounding hypertension and stroke highlight a global health challenge that directly impacts international workforces. The World Health Organization estimates that 1.4 billion adults worldwide live with hypertension, yet only one in four have their blood pressure adequately controlled. This lack of control is the primary driver behind the fact that approximately 80% of strokes are preventable.
For globally mobile employees, the risk profile is often elevated. The 2026 Cigna International Health Study found that 80% of globally mobile individuals report feeling stressed, a known contributor to elevated blood pressure. Furthermore, more than half of these employees reported that their health was impacted due to delays in care, often caused by barriers to accessing unfamiliar healthcare systems. When routine check-ups are missed, asymptomatic conditions like hypertension go undetected until they result in a severe event like a stroke.
💡Did you know? Hypertension is often called the “silent killer” because it typically presents no symptoms. It quietly damages blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. The only way to detect it is through regular blood pressure monitoring.
What You Can Do: Prevention and Detection
Managing the risk of hypertension and stroke requires consistent, proactive steps. The theme for World Hypertension Day 2026 is “Controlling Hypertension Together: check your blood pressure regularly, defeat the silent killer.” This underscores the importance of routine monitoring.
- Know your numbers: Regular blood pressure checks are the first line of defence. Adults should have their blood pressure measured at least once a year, or more frequently if advised by a doctor.
- Recognise the signs of a stroke: The American Stroke Association promotes the B.E. F.A.S.T. acronym to identify stroke symptoms: Balance loss, Eye (vision) changes, Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, and Time to call emergency services.
- Manage stress: Chronic stress elevates cortisol and adrenaline, which can raise blood pressure. Finding effective stress management techniques is crucial for long-term cardiovascular health.
- Prioritize routine screenings: Do not let the complexity of a new healthcare system deter you from scheduling annual health check-ups. These screenings are vital for detecting silent conditions.

How Employers Can Support Chronic Condition Awareness
Employers play a critical role in mitigating the risks associated with chronic conditions among their globally mobile workforce. By fostering a culture of preventive health, organisations can improve employee wellbeing and manage long-term insurance costs.
Encourage annual health screenings: Actively promote the use of wellness benefits and annual check-ups included in your international health insurance plan. Ensure employees know how to access these services in their host country.
Provide access to telehealth: Telehealth services can bridge the gap for employees who are hesitant to navigate local clinics, offering an accessible route for initial consultations and routine monitoring advice.
Review insurance plan design: Ensure your international health insurance plan provides robust coverage for chronic condition management, including regular screenings, prescription medications, and specialist consultations.
Communicate clearly: Use internal communication channels to share information about the B.E. F.A.S.T. stroke warning signs and the importance of blood pressure monitoring.

Why Chronic Conditions Awareness Matters for Employers
Chronic conditions like hypertension are among the most significant drivers of healthcare costs in international health insurance portfolios. When left unmanaged, they lead to high-cost claims associated with cardiovascular events, hospitalisations, and long-term rehabilitation.
Employers who invest in preventive health measures and encourage regular screenings see a return on investment through reduced absenteeism, improved productivity, and more stable insurance premiums. By ensuring that employees have the resources and coverage they need to manage their health proactively, organisations protect both their people and their bottom line.
At One World Cover, we help international employers design health insurance plans that prioritise preventive care and chronic condition management. If you would like to discuss how your current plan supports the long-term health of your globally mobile workforce, our team is here to help.
How One World Cover Supports Preventative Care
Annual health check-ups are one of the few areas where international health insurance delivers provable cost-return through early detection, lower severity claims, and healthier long-term risk pools.
One World Cover actively works with international employers, schools and corporate clients to ensure that:
- Annual check-ups are included in wellness and outpatient benefits
- High-value screening packages are negotiated with trusted clinics
- Staff know how to use their benefits effectively
- Preventative care is positioned as a cost-control strategy, not just a wellbeing initiative
We also support members in identifying suitable hospitals, comparing packages and aligning screenings with their insurance coverage to maximise value.
Your health is your most valuable asset. If you have not had a comprehensive annual health check-up in the past 12 months, January is the ideal time to book one. Early screening, better awareness and informed action can make a measurable difference to your health, wellbeing and long-term quality of life.
If you would like support identifying suitable packages in your city or understanding what your insurance plan covers, please contact our team at [email protected].
