Hidden Data, Hidden Costs: Why International Schools Must Take Control of Health Insurance

Using Health Insurance Data to Beat Rising Costs in International Schools

In a recent article from Sage Consultancy – Taking Advantage of Your Hidden Data – William Scarborough (former CFO/Director of Finance and Operations at the Singapore American School, the Anglo-American School in Moscow, the American School of Bucharest, and the Canadian Academy in Kobe) outlined how much valuable information often sits unused in international schools. His message was simple: data you already generate, if analyzed correctly, can transform financial decision-making.

The same lesson applies directly to health insurance.

Why Claims Data Matters

Health insurance is one of the biggest line items in any international school’s budget. Yet, in too many cases, schools make million-dollar renewal decisions with only surface-level information and claims reports that lack any detail. The real story lies deeper, in the claims data.

  • Which categories of claims are driving costs?
  • Are outpatient visits ballooning?
  • How much of your trend is preventable?
  • Are a small number of high-cost cases distorting the renewal?

Without answers, schools are negotiating blind. With data, schools can design benefits strategically, target cost drivers, and challenge unjustified increases.

Hidden Data = Hidden Costs

When insurers or brokers fail to provide clear claims reporting, they hold the power. Schools are left with little choice but to accept renewal terms as presented. This is not just frustrating; it’s costly. Every opaque renewal cycle compounds into higher long-term spend and fewer options for plan redesign.

Claims data, when made transparent, flips the balance. It allows schools to:

  • Benchmark utilization against peers
  • Model benefit changes with confidence
  • Separate insurer “trend” assumptions from the school’s actual experience
  • Build a long-term strategy rather than reacting each summer

The Broker Makes the Difference

Not all brokers treat data the same way. Some barely mention it. Others make it the cornerstone of their service.

At One World Cover, we’ve been receiving monthly claims data from Cigna for more than 10 years. We built our own in-house platform – “Control Room” – to translate that raw data into actionable insights for schools. Many brokers are only just waking up to the importance of data; some insurers will gladly keep clients in the dark if no one asks the tough questions.

The choice of broker matters. Work with the wrong one, or go directly to the insurer, and you’re at a structural disadvantage. Work with the right one, and you gain transparency, leverage, and a plan for long-term sustainability.

Moving Forward

William’s advice in the Sage Consultancy article was clear: your hidden data is already there, waiting to be put to use. The same is true for health insurance. Schools that demand claims reporting, partner with brokers who know how to use it, and act early in the renewal cycle consistently achieve better outcomes.

Health insurance will always be a significant cost. But with the right data – and the right partner – it doesn’t have to be an unpredictable or uncontrollable one.
